Bohol: Heart of the Islands, Truly Philippines!

Bohol, one of the Philippines' prime tourist destinations, is an island-province located in the Central Visayas region. With a land area of 4,117.26 square kilometres (1,589.68 sq mi) and a coastline 261 kilometres (162 mi) long, it is the tenth largest island in the country.

The province is known as the site for the world's first international treaty of friendship between Spain and the Philippines. Known today as Sandugo, it was performed between the Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna the chieftain of Bohol on March 16, 1565, to seal their friendship as part of the tribal tradition. In commemoration of the historic event, a monument was constructed in Tagbilaran City and an annual festival is celebrated in the month of July.

The Chocolate Hills which consists of 1,268 cone-shaped hills that are nearly symmetrical in shape and height and are scattered mainly all over the towns of Carmen, Sagbayan, and Batuan. These cone-shaped hills, which are actually grass-covered limestone have been declared as the country’s third National Geological Monument and is featured in the provincial flag. During dry summer seasons, this haycock hills dries up and transforms into thousands of ”chocolate kisses” thus coming up with its name.

Another popular tourist destination is the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella. It is a 167-hectare sanctuary which is mostly uninhabited and isolated from settlements thus allowing the tarsiers to live and reproduce freely in a natural setting. These charming tarsiers are only three to six inches tall and is one of the smallest primates in the world.
